I'm on my way to New York for a week. I will get to be with Oscar for his first Halloween. His mom adores Halloween and costumes so it will be a fun time. I have my lap top and camera so follow my adventures in the land of OZ

Do you remember all those urban legends about some of the most impossible situations that could ever happen? Perhaps you've gotten the emails about "someone's aunt's cousin, twice removed" that had some unusual event happen. (or was it your hairdresser's Uncle Albert?) Any way.....if strange events are going to take place, you can almost bet that it will happen to our son.

Last year at this time this happened..... when Andy got home he noticed some kind of dark stain dripping down the wall from the upstairs apartment. He didn't think much of it and went to bed, thinking he would deal with it the next day. When he woke up that morning, the liquid had run all the way down the wall and had begun to puddle on the floor behind his bike. A bubble formed on the top of the pool and his roommate wanted to pop it, but Andy suggested to leave it alone...who knows what it could be. So, they called the landlord to inform him about the issue.

The police showed up to inspect the upstairs apartment, as the tenant couldn't be reached. To make a long story short, the man upstairs had died about a week ago! His bodily fluids had leaked into Andy's apartment (yes, I said 'bodily fluids'). Nasty!

So, Boy Wonder moves into a new apartment with a completely different room mate.

This year's event: Our son gets a phone call from his female room mate. She tells him that she had a male friend over to watch TV in their apartment. The guy tells her that he is going outside to smoke, so she gives him a key to their apartment so he can get back in. She goes into her bedroom and has the door closed.

When she comes out of the bedroom she notices that Boy Wonder's new high def TV is gone, as well as his Play Station 3 and all of his games.

She calls a locksmith and has the locks changed immediately and calls the police to report the incident. Since the items stolen are not hers she is told to have our son come in and make out a report.

She feels really badly about the situation so replaces everything that was stolen.

Boy Wonder handles the situation well, considering he has worked really hard to pay for these items and he has only had the TV for about a week. He doesn't yell or scream at his roommate but he does suggest that she not leave future friends alone in their apartment and then hangs up to "call his momma".

Now I ask you.....is it New York, Boy Wonder or the time of the year that I need to worry about?

After spending our morning in the 17 Century we spent the afternoon and evening in Manhattan. Andy joined us and I finally got to see some of the City that I had missed viewing earlier.

We walked all over the city and it was amazing. I certainly felt like a tourist as I spent most of time looking up at all the tall buildings, signs and sights.

Mr. Wonderful does not like crowds so he had his "don't mess with me" face on. We did get him to loosen up a little especially when we went to F.A.O. Schwarz toy store.

Times Square always gives me "goose bumps". There is always so much going on and the city is in constant motion. We went to the new M&M store at Times Square as well as the Hershey Store. The store smells like chocolate and reminded us of the chocolate factory in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

Mr. Wonderful is a Fox News guy so he and Andy had to have a picture in front of the studio. They took it especially for our Becky's amusement (they just wished she could have been there!) This one's for you babe!

Suzy and I are hamming it up with the door man at F.A.O. Schwarz .

Who doesn't enjoy a toy store? It certainly brings out the kid in all of us (even Mr. Wonderful). Mr. Wonderful enjoys calamari and is always talking about eating octopus. So he enjoyed hanging out with this stuffed Octopus version. (They do look like pals, don't they?)

Not to be out done by Dad....Andy and Suzy look like they have the catch of the day.

I even got to "hang With Hagrid" who is made entirely of Lego's. Do you see a family resemblance?

We ate at John's Pizza and had New York style pizza thanks to connections of our son Andy. We had the best booth and great service. It was a great day full of fun and great memories.

In order to really appreciate all the conveniences we have at our finger tips today you should really go back into history and try your hand at many of skills and trades that were essential in the Early National Era (1700-1800). Saturday morning we we went to Van Courtlandt Manor and participated in candle making, tin punching, basket weaving, barrel making, and other skills.

Tim got into splitting wood at the barrel making booth. It amazed me how long it took to make a barrel or a bucket and the craftsmanship it took.

Suzy was the candle maker. It was a multi-dipping experience over a hot kettle of bees wax and animal fat on a hot day. Suzy soon found out that there is a art to it if you want your candle to look like a candle . She was very pleased at her creation which she presented to me for our country manor.

We watched the cheese making process. It was long and time consuming. The girl that was demonstrating the process had never done it before and was just as thrilled as we were as the curds started appearing.

Who knew that Suzy would be so good at basket weaving? The demonstrators were very informative and the best part was the "hands on experience". We really got a taste of how long it took to make the food and the tools needed for daily living.

Suzy and I made "Sleeping Sachets". We got to use our sewing skills and fill our sachets with a mixture of dried lavender, rose petal and lemon grass grown on the manor. Who knew that they were into "aroma therapy" back in the 17 hundreds? It smells wonderful!

My favorite demonstrator was the flax guy. He showed us how every part of the flax plant was used for hemp and rope making, to carded and spun into linen thread for clothing or pressed for oil or used for seed. He told us how the term "Flaxen hair" and "Tow headed" come from the blond color of the flax. Tow is the cast off of the flax plant. Linen is highly flammable so servants working in the kitchen would wear wool clothing even in the summer. It took a year to make one outfit.

Suzy and I also got into tin tapping. We each got to pick a pattern and pound a design. Suzy chose a butterfly and of course I chose a daisy. It was fun and we made it through with no loss of fingers.

Mr. Wonderful was intriqued with black smith and tool making. He watched while they were making nails. We had a long discussion on what job each of us would have had if we lived in that era. I of course took the job of "Lady of the Manor!"

Walking back in history, even for a day, was a wonderful experience. I highly recommend it!

Ah....Yes, Spring was definitely in the air in New York this past weekend. We had such a good time that it was hard to leave. Miss Suzy (the ultimate tour guide and hostess) had a variety of activities for us to chose from.

Of course this daisy had to see the Botanical Gardens! It doesn't matter how many times you've been there ....there's always something new in bloom. We got in on the early spring program called "Mud, Bud and Bloom" which included blooming cherry trees, daffodils walk, tulips and early varieties of lilacs. (pure heaven!)

As you can see even Mr. Wonderful got in the "spirit" of the beautiful blooms and started serenading me. What more could a girl wish for?

Flower Girl
Originally uploaded by peachicken.

Look what's blooming at the New York Botanical Gardens! We went to the gardens on Saturday. It was "The Spring Sensation Show". I will be posting some of the most gorgeous flowers you've ever seen.

This is our "Graduate" who is blooming with ideas. She graduated from Long Island University on Sunday with a Master's Degree in Library and Information Science.

She is a great example of "Bloom Where You Are Planted!"

I observed her today doing a "Baby Time" program at the local library. Talk about a hard crowd....her babies were popping all over the room while she is singing and doing finger play action songs with the moms. What an amazing young woman!

Her program today was "Mother Goose" since Mother's Day was yesterday. I was "her show and tell item" today....here's my momma! What fun! Today is our last day and we hit the road tomorrow.

The Daisy Patch is looking pretty good to me right now. The subway was an experience in and of itself! My amazing son-in-law expertly guided all over the city. This has been a great place to visit but nothing beats home! I know, I've neglected you terribly....but I will visit your sites when I return.

Signs, Signs

Some of the signs on New York City streets.

The Chrysler building is in the background. I love the Chrysler building! It was built by Walter P. Chrysler and is an homage to the car. The spire was inspired by a radiator grill. The 30th floor sports wheels, complete fenders and hubcaps and its corners are decorated with huge stainless steel radiator caps.

The Chrysler building is the essence of Art Deco style, which is characterized by bold geometric shapes.

Built in the 1920's, it is definitely a luxury building. Stainless steel was exorbitantly expensive in the 20's and was used with abandon to represent the chrome trim on cars.

We could have easily left him here and picked him up at the end of the day.

Serendipity

There was a two hour wait so we did some shopping in nearby stores (Dylan's Candy Bar and Bloomingdales.) The wait was well worth it. So that's another thing I can cross off my "life list".

Dylan's Candy Store
Originally uploaded by peachicken.

This is a sweet stop if you have to wait for a table at Serendipity's. It's right down the street and features all kind of candy. One of my daughters loves to take pictures of her feet so we couldn't resist a shot of all of our feet on this "Sweet Spot" on the floor.

Tim and Suzy are sitting on the peppermint stools at the kids "Candy Bar". Mr. Wonderful and I couldn't resist the colorful window display capturing this remarkable store.

Suzy loves to collect Pez despensers and started her collection in high school. Her collection is way over 200 now and this display was on the wall at Dylan's.

We loved the visit through the "penny candy" section of old favorites...candy that is hard to find now and definitely cost way more than a penny.

Another interesting feature was candy selection of famous actors. Our son, loves circus peanuts ( the orange marshmellow variety) so does Michael J. Fox. He was intriqued by that sweet fact.

This store has it all. Jelly Beans, M&M's, all flavors, all colors. We were tempted to buy our Canadian daughter a "Dixie Chick" tee-shirt featuring the Rebel Flag and a marshmellow Peep.

We did buy some special Belgium chocolate bars for a special friend celebrating a birthday and watching our animals while we gone. Now if we can just stay out of them till we get home.

Ok, yesterday while y' all looked at a picture of my very attractive mother and learned of her many fine qualities , Mr. Wonderful and I left the daisy patch for the big city.

Yes, I realize I just got back from being a "Southern Belle" in Savannah. This trip is in recognition of Baby Girl's achievements in the academic world. She is getting her Master's Degree this weekend and I'm playing the role of proud momma.

I'm so excited to see her world and view the things that are important to them. Baby Girl's hubby has a new job with World Vision and my Mr. Wonderful is chomping at the bit to spend the day in the warehouse with him. I frankly have seen warehouses before, so I am so into sightseeing, shopping and taking in the Big Apple.

Boy Wonder will spend a good part of the day with us too. I adore my children so always look forward to seeing them and catching up with their lives . I have my list of "must see while in New York" and the batteries are charged up in the camera. Got my comfortable shoes so I'm set for the day.

Catch ya later and post our "Catch of the Day".
