For Mr. Wonderful's birthday I gave him a book called "Dadisms....What Dad says, and what it really Means."

I was hoping it would give him some inspiration to start blogging again. The title started me thinking of what were some Dadisms that were truly unique to Mr. Wonderful.

Before I explain the one that instantly came to my mind let me give you some background of my man. Mr. Wonderful is a planner. He firmly believes that if you "fail to prepare, you prepare to fail!" At any given time he can produce a "Leatherman" multitool, a Swiss Army knief (only on Sundays when he doesn't carry his Leatherman), a cell phone, safety pin or bandaid.

He loves tools and invests heavily in them. He loves to read and has an extensive "How to" library. His favorite item to take while traveling is his "beloved Missionary Vest". The Vest is actually a photographer's vest with multiple pockets and zipper pockets . He liked to wear this vest on missionary trips to carry his passport and other important items that he did not want to get misplaced.

Mr. Wonderful loves Haiti and has gone on 9 short term mission trips there. As a rite of passage, Mr. Wonderful would take each of our children with him to Haiti when they were seniors in high school. It gave our children a view of a very poor third world country and allowed them to see how blessed they actually were.

If you asked any of our children what they remembered about their trip with dad.....all of them will probably say. " I remember Dad asking me a million times, "Where's your passport?"

The funniest part of this statement is that he was the one that carried all our passports. It got to be such a family joke that I would write letters to each child before they left to read while on their trip with dad. The letters would tell them how much they were missed and some of my hopes and dreams for them as they bonded with Dad.

I usually ended each letter with this statement. "Just remember, that when dad asks you where your passport is.....he is actually saying "I love you and don't want to leave you in a foreign country cause I'm afraid of your mother!"

Do you remember any phrases your Dad would say and what it actually meant?

A weekly meme for giving thanks and/or for noting important events in our lives.

If you would like to participate just click here for all the details...

1. This week was Valentine's Day and also My Mr. Wonderful's birthday. They say" you have to kiss a lot of toads before you get your handsome prince"....I met my prince in Sunday School almost 34 years ago.

2. I love intelligent people and Mr. Wonderful could have been the model for "The Absent Minded Professor....right down to his pocket protector!"

3. He was "bumbling and stumbling, awkward and ill at ease in a social setting" so naturally I fell for him instantly.

4. His transition from a toad to a handsome prince began to happen in stages. I saw many hard edges begin to soften and round out as we became parents.

5. One of his first sermons after our first child was born was entitled
, "10 Commandments for Raising Children". After our second child was born he changed the sermon to "10 Suggestions for Raising Children." After our son was born, he threw away the sermon!

6. The birthday card I gave him sums him up well...."Funny. Sweet. Thoughtful. Kind. Handsome face. Cute behind!

7. I love his intergrity, his passion for life , his devotion to God and our family, his ability to fix almost anything, his servant's heart and mostly I still adore his sweet bumbling, stumbling, awkwardness.

This is My Mr. Wonderful standing next to a Gutenberg Bible on display at the New York Public Library. It was printed in 1455 using moveable type. 180 Bibles were produced in 3 years ( the amount of time it would have taken to hand write one copy.) Pretty remarkable accomplishment!

(Shamelessly stolen from Carman...Gone to Plaid)

  1. Valentine's Day has come and gone. Mr. Wonderful went out into the cold and ice and put wood into the wood stove to keep the house warm and toasty. When he came in he kissed me on the neck with his ice cold lips and said, " It's nice to know my kisses still make you shiver!"
  2. Have you seen the anti-valentines that you can send on line. I was tempted to send one to Carman but you can view them here.
  3. The one I like has a picture of Cupid and says, "Fat, Naked, Dangerous!"
  4. I actually did send a valentine this year ..... It was a "first Valentine" so you know it had to be special. Any guesses who it was for? If you said " Emma" give yourself 5 points.
  5. I went by the drug store and super market today and marveled at all the half priced Valentine's Day items. It made me chuckle as my mom used to tell me that a card or gift can be early but it "doesn't count if it's late!
  6. My Mr. Wonderful has a bad cold and his voice is really low and husky......He sounds like Barry White and I think it sounds sexy!
  7. Men are so practical when it comes to buying Valentine gifts.....last year I got kitchen knives, this year I got "card reader" for the digital camera.
  8. If I had gotten a true life valentine's day card from Mr. Wonderful it would have said, " I have a bad cold, I feel lousy, I have no energy and you smashed up the car......But you know I love you right?"

  9. Today is Mr. Wonderful's Birthday! I made him stay home from work, took him to the library where he could check out a new book and read to his heart's content. He calls it "Cave Time" .
10. I bought him a Book called "Dadisms" .....What Dads say and what it really means? I'm hoping it will encourage him to blog more. Maybe he will share some of his own unique "Dadisms".
11. Mr. Wonderful's sister sent him a "Shoefly Pie" for his birthday. He rations it out so it will last longer. He looks forward to having a birthday every year just so he can get his pie.
12. Shouldn't we show love to those that are special all year long instead of just one isolated day in February?
13. If you ask Mr. Wonderful what he got for Valentine's day/birthday he'll tell you he is getting a new "to us car."....then he'll tell you it because his wife smashed up our old one! So much for romance!

It's official, everyone in my family blogs now. Mr. Wonderful was converted by the pleas of his family that he have his own voice to tell "the other side of the story". (Not that my stories are not absolutely truthful or biased in any way!)

Both son-in-laws have their own blogs and Boy Wonder is on "my space" so it seemed only right to get dear old dad to record his thoughts and memories.

Any one have any guesses what the name of his blog would be? Meet Mr. Wonderful, Gabbing with Gramps? Aristotle Brown? An Uncured Ham Speaks? Chuckles with Charlie? Reading Rants? The Mellow Fellow? Born to be Mild? Not even close. The name of his, by invitation only blog is "Old Dad's World".

So far he has two posts.....one about his naughty days of throwing the cat down the laundry shoot and one about some special Christmas memories.

About one week after our wedding, Mr. Wonderful and I were coming back from our honeymoon and stopped overnight to visit with his sister and her family.

I adore my Sister-in-law and it wasn't long till we were gabbing in the kitchen fixing the evening meal together while Mr. Wonderful sat in the living room with baby niece Charlotte. Charlotte was a year old and a typically active baby.

Mr. Wonderful promptly picked up a newspaper and began reading totally ignoring Charlotte who began to creep closer and closer to the edge of the couch. Mr. Wonderful, lowered the paper, and said, "Baby, you're going to hurt yourself" and continued reading.

Baby Charlotte decided that this was a new game so she continued to edge closer to the end of the cushion. Again, Mr. Wonderful, lowered the paper, evaluated the situation and said, "Baby, You're Going to Hurt Yourself!" He continued reading, never pulling her back from the edge.

Charlotte continued to the end of the couch and promptly fell off landing on the carpet with a thud. She instantly began crying which caused her beloved "Uncle Wonderful" to look down on her and say, " Baby,I told you that you were going to hurt yourself!"

This was the first glimpse of the future father of my children! Charlotte wasn't hurt which is more than I can say for Mr. Wonderful. She was swept off in the comfort of her mommy while some of the shining armor began to fall off my knight.

To his credit, he was and is a wonderful loving and protective father . Now whenever I want to tease him all I have to say is, "Baby, you're going to hurt yourself."

High School Pic - Dad
Originally uploaded by peachicken.

Isn't he cute? This is my Mr. Wonderful over 35 years ago. He wasn't my Mr. Wonderful back then.....he was Mr. Shy Awkward Nerd.

I met Mr. Shy Awkward Nerd in Sunday School . I had seen him once before and was determined to meet him, so determined that I went to Sunday School after working the night shift.

I came early, he was late!

I was hoping to sit with him during church, he decided to sing in the choir!

I lingered longer after church hoping to run into him, he went directly to his car.

Fortunately he was parked behind my car and we ended up going out to lunch together. He took me out for pizza and I ended up paying for it. The more embarrassed he became the cuter he got.

I went home amused and intrigued.

He went home and called his mom about this Virginia Beach nurse he had met.

His mom told me later that she knew he was smitten right then and there!

I met him in March, was engaged by April and married in July.

Slowly over the years he began to be less shy and awkward. He gained confidence, a measure of success, life experience and three lively active children that knocked off the rough edges of two inexperienced parents.

This July will be 33 years. ( and he truly is....My Mr. Wonderful!)

Charlie and JJ
Originally uploaded by Momma B.

It's Father's Day and this is the typical "look" around here. Sunday after church is a time to rest, nap, read, watch tv or a movie.

This is My Mr. Wonderful and the other "male" that lives with us....our very cuddly cat JJ. When not watching birds at the feeder, or taking a nap, JJ likes being close to "dad".

I was going to write a lovely tribute to my Mr. Wonderful about his being a wonderful dad, husband and friend but I didn't want you to think I was bragging! (Just the facts....)

So here's to men in my life....You're the Best!

"If you don't need stitches, you're not hurt!" This is a statement that My Mr. Wonderful uses frequently. Our children will know the statement well as it is part of their Dad's "Mr. Macho" persona.

We do very physical work. Hand loading shipping containers is one of those jobs. Mr. Wonderful is very good at being the load master. So good that he always gets this job. It means that he has to pick up and place each item on the shipping container. The last few days have been very exhausting as we are doing back to back containers for a mission in Haiti. The first container went pretty fast and we had some extra help with the loading.

Today we started the second container. We had fewer people and everyone is tired from loading yesterday. We were loading light fixtures when I was called to help Mr. Wonderful. The urgency in their voices signal the nurse in me that it was an emergency. Sure enough I see my husband of 32 years with a bloody handerchief wrapped around his right hand .

"Let's go," he says. "I have to get stitches!" This is a man that never complains and never says," take me to the doctor", much less "I have to go get stitches." He held pressure on the hand while I drove. I never asked to see the wound or question his judgement.

Forturnately they were able to take him right in at our local clinic while I filled out the paper work. We were in and out (with a considerable lighter wallet) in less than an hour. I didn't realize how shook up I was till I couldn't remember our phone number. (Honestly, I never call myself and it's programed into the cell phone!)

I know this man so ask the Dr. while he is in the room if he can go back to work. The doctor looks at me like I'm crazy and assures me that he needs to go home and keep his arm elevated.

He's already talking about finishing the container tomorrow.

Honestly......"All men are stupid and I'm married to their King!" Bless His Heart!

Charlie in the pulpit
Originally uploaded by Momma B.

This picture was totally staged for effect.

But the reality took place this past Sunday as Charlie preached in the pulpit of two Lutheran churches in Lexington, Virginia.

They weren't just any churches but churches his dad pastored for 20 years.

Churches he had grown-up in as a child.

Bethany Lutheran has a building that is over 100 year old.

It's a beautiful small church with stain glass windows and high ceilings.

Many of the people have moved away, died out, or left the church,

Those that remain have come to hear " Dr. Bennetch's youngest son, Charles."

Not because he is such a great "missionary" or "speaker" ...........

But because of the love and honor for his mom and dad

long since with the Lord but forever in their hearts.

It's humbling and gratifying to know your parents made a difference

in a very small community

to a handful of people

who still remember.

It's Friday and I'm back in the Nest. Charlie left for Marion North Carolina this afternoon so I have the entire house to myself ( maybe even Lucy Cat will finally have to like me since her favorite man is not here.) So I can play the CD player as loud as I want, eat everything that's not good for me, watch every sappy movie on TV and sleep in the middle of the bed! I can smell the lilacs now....what a heavenly fragrance. This is contentment.....a dog at your feet and kitties curled up in your lap. Now all need is Charlie......strange how much I miss that grumpy old man!

What a Cutie! I never get tired of looking at that face......good thing after 30 years of marriage! This is my chubby hubby in his "den". It's actually the guest room\office but certainly one of his favorite habitats. He likes to hibernate in there or our bedroom with a good book. He calls it "Cave Time". Hmm....does that make him a Cave Man?

He gave up his weekend for me . We went to see my mom. It's the only weekend we will have off for the next four weeks. I told him I would drive up there by my self ( cue martyr music and violins) but he knows how I hate to drive by myself. What a good guy! I'm really trying to be a better daughter and see my mom at least once a month now that we are only 4 hours away.

Speaking of Mom. I asked her if she wanted some company this last weekend and that we were coming to see her. I asked her not to cook all my favorite foods and especially not desserts. Did she listen? Of course not. She made all my favorites and even sent me home with an apple cake! I told her I would probably take it to the mission and let "my guys" eat it but she insisted I take it. "My Guys" told me to mind my own business and if my momma wanted to send them a cake they certainly were willing to eat it! What a sacrifice on their part!

Charlie and I read a biography on Mother Teresa. I was really impressed by her deep commitment to Christ even as a small child. She talks about the value of silence and the its importance to hear God speak. I'm hardly ever quiet. That's a problem!
