I've had weight issues all my life. I know how to diet. I've spent a lifetime on a diet. I've literally lost hundreds of pounds....only to find those pounds again as well as others that someone else must have dropped.

My theory: Weight is neither lost nor gained it is just simply redistributed. Some people have to gain weight so others may lose it. From my way of thinking lots of people should be thanking me for picking up their lost tonage.

Recently I read an article that really made sense to me. ( Leslie Sansone's Eat Smart, Walk Strong . It was called "The Dirty Dozen" and suggests avoiding 12 food categories . The article states that you have to be very creative to gain weight without these (which are all sources of either artery-clogging saturated fat or insulin-spiking refined carbohydrates.) Here's the list:

  1. Beef and Veal
  2. Pork
  3. Bacon, Ham, Sausage
  4. Lamb
  5. Full-Fat Cheese
  6. Butter and Margarine
  7. White Flour
  8. White Rice
  9. Potatoes
  10. Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil
  11. Sugar
  12. Sour Cream, Cream, and Whole-Fat Milk
It made sense to me so I've posted these on my refrigerator as a reminder.

A Red Flag Food is a reminder that Danger Lurks in these shelves. Red Flag Foods are foods that I particularly enjoy and have a hard time stopping with the suggested serving indicated.

Pizza is a Red Flag Food for me? Do you have a particular Red Flag Food?

Hi Lazy Daisy. Michele sent me today. I love your template!

Chocolate is a red flag food for me. I always say I'm going to eat just one piece, but it always ends up being so many more than that. Good luck avoiding your red flag foods!

I've given up fast food, because I was eating too much of it. I'm trying to exercise more. It helps when you post your resolutions and then can't bear the thought of the embarrassment of having to say you failed!

Mine are definitely white rice and all kinds of desserts! I've posted my recent dilemma about dieting, too. Hope you could drop by and leave your opinion about my issues with weight loss.

I love the animation on your site! :-)

Basically anything with fat in it is a red flag - I had my gallbladder removed, so my diet is now very very boring - no fat, no dairy, no fun. But, my tummy doesn't hurt and if I stay away from those items, I don't have "other issues".
I have to say I miss ice cream and late night bowls of cereal the most.

Chocolat! Said the french way! I really have a hard time with it, especially at that time of the month! Peanut butter and carmel are the same. Ugh!

That's why I'm on the South Beach Diet...again...even though I don't need to lose weight. I CANNOT control myself around certain foods, so I have to eliminate them entirely for a few days until the cravings go away. Pepsi is my biggest red flag item. If I have one in the morning, I want it all day. Chocolate is another one, although not quite as bad. If I allow myself to have any, it is best to do it at night, so I won't crave it all day. I do OK without the breads and rice, but I love my starchy desserts (Krispy Kreme...oooohhh)

Mmm I love pasta with cream sauce with full fat parmesean on it. I think that blows through a ton of red flags. Just throw some bacon on there and I'm done. Good luck with staying away from those foods. It sounds like it makes sense. Here from Micheles

I'm with Shelli: chocolate is deadly.

But when I'm in the midst of cycling season - basically, 9 months of the year here in Canada - I can be quite a bit less strict with my food regime. The problem during bike season is eating enough to NOT lose weight - weird!

Carmi is right. What I did in 2003 was go on the Special K diet after consulting my doctor. One bowl in the morning with Skim Milk, One in the Afternoon (I like the cherry flavored type). I drink 8 glasses of water a day and then have a sensible sized meal at night of either fish or chicken baked. Plus I walk 5 miles a day. I lost 2-3 pounds a week and lost the 50 I needed to.

Ditto all the above! But let's stop saying "DIET." The word alone is a turn off!

Yep. Mine is Dairy. If I don't have it in the house, I'm okay, but it's hard when I have to have it here for the kids.
