The countdown has been begun. In only a few minutes a new year will be here.

A New Year, with endless possibilities,

A New Year, to correct mistakes, or make new ones.

A New Year, to focus on new blessing or old fears.

A New Year, a clean slate.....no "do-overs" needed .

A New Year, to do better and to be better.

Happy New Year .......Happy Possibilities!

Now that I've posted 5 things I want to remember that occurred Nationally and Globally I thought I would post the 5 most important things that occurred in 2005 in Daisy Land.

  1. Christmas in New York City with the whole family. An event that took over a year to plan and was the highlight of my year.
  2. Our June vacation in Saskatoon to attend the wedding reception of our daughter and SIL. We were able to meet their friends and family members and get a peek at their lives in Saskatoon.
  3. Our yearly return to Savannah, Georgia to visit with friends, renew acquaintances, visit churches, supporters, small groups and former neighbors. It is always a busy time and we feel like visiting celebrities.
  4. National Missionary Convention in Atlanta, Georgia. We have many friends that we only get an opportunity to see at National Convention. This year being in the south was an extra blessings as I was able to spend time with my best friend that lives there.
  5. My mister's short term mission trip to Haiti. He has been to Haiti 9 times and had not been able to return in several years. Our church in Savannah paid his way to go with their mission team. It was a huge blessing to him as he was able to see many old friends and check on our Haitian son that lives at the orphange. It was signfigant to me because I don't do alone well and we decided that we have to travel together in the future.
  6. (I know I said 5....I lied!) Our friends John and Sandy Ihrig moved from Savannah to work with us at the mission. We are humbled and overjoyed by their dedication and desire to work with us. (In my world....that's huge!)
What rocked your world in 2005?

Was it family, jobs, illness, relationships or financial?

Those of you who know me, will attest that I am not a political activist nor do I post rants about social injustice.

It's not that I don't care about these issues.....but realistically they usually don't effect me in "daisy land" and being a self professed "lazy daisy" I am not as informed as I need to be .

I find that I am more event centered than time oriented. I know where I was when Kennedy was shot! (yes, I'm that old) I remember where I was when John Lennon was killed and I remember well the events of 9/11 . The question mainly to myself: " Will I remember the significant events of 2005?" So without moralizing, demonizing, or throwing stones these are some of the events nationally and globally I want to remember about 2005.

  1. Katrina hits the gulf coast devastating New Orleans , and Mississippi coast line. Massive destruction and thousands lost everything. Houston, Dallas, and other large cities taken in refugees. (Note to self: Refugees...other Americans.)
  2. Disaster upon Disaster beyond U.S. Shores. Southeast Asia started the year with destruction left by the tsunami (Dec.26,2004) and ended the year with millions more in Pakistan and India homeless and more than 80,000 people dead from a massive earthquake. Latin American also had massive mudslides from Hurricane Stan and some entire communities in Guatemala were declared to be mass graves, as it was too dangerous to dig for bodies.
  3. The War in Iraq: The first multi party elections in 81 years were held. While this is wonderful for the Iraqi people, the death toll to US military increases daily. This effects me in "daisy land" as many of those "peace keepers" are young men the age of my son.
  4. Supreme Court Changes: The US Supreme court Justices had remained unchanged for more than decade. In 2005, Sandra Day O'Conner announced her retirement, Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, 80, died and was replaced by John Roberts with a confirmation vote of 78-22. Confirmation hearing start in January for Circuit Appeals Court Judge Samuel Alito.
  5. Papal Transitions:Pope John Paul 2 to Benedict 16 A personable, deeply spiritual, well-traveled, and once athletic pope who had endured Nazi occupation, stood firm in communism's face, inspired millions of young people, survived a would-be assassin's bullet and the ravages of Parkinson's disease, in the end fell to flu at age 84.
I'm sure there are lots more than could be added to the list. But considering I've never really looked at the world in this light before these are my top 5. What would you have on your list?

Zen Judaism

( Totally and unashamedly stolen from running2ks ) I loved this!

If there is no self,
whose arthritis is this?

Be here now.
Be someplace else later.
Is that so complicated?

Drink tea and nourish life.
With the first sip… joy.
With the second… satisfaction.
With the third, peace.
With the fourth, a danish.

Wherever you go, there you are.
Your luggage is another story.

Accept misfortune as a blessing.
Do not wish for perfect health
or a life without problems.
What would you talk about?

The journey of a thousand miles
begins with a single “oy.”

There is no escaping karma.
In a previous life, you never called,
you never wrote, you never visited.
And whose fault was that?

Zen is not easy.
It takes effort to attain nothingness.
And then what do you have?
Bupkes.

The Tao does not speak.
The Tao does not blame.
The Tao does not take sides.
The Tao has no expectations.
The Tao demands nothing of others.
The Tao is not Jewish.

Breathe in. Breathe out.
Breathe in. Breathe out.
Forget this and attaining Enlightenment
will be the least of your problems.

Let your mind be as a floating cloud.
Let your stillness be as the wooded glen.
And sit up straight. You’ll never meet the
Buddha with such rounded shoulders.

Be patient and achieve all things.
Be impatient and achieve all things faster.

To Find the Buddha, look within.
Deep inside you are ten thousand flowers.
Each flower blossoms ten thousand times.
Each blossom has ten thousand petals.
You might want to see a specialist.

To practice Zen and the art of Jewish
motorcycle maintenance, do the following:
get rid of the motorcycle.
What were you thinking?

Be aware of your body.
Be aware of your perceptions.
Keep in mind that not every physical
sensation is a symptom of a terminal illness.

The Torah says,”Love thy neighbor as thyself.”
The Buddha says there is no “self.”
So, maybe you are off the hook.

The Buddha taught that one should practice loving
kindness to all sentient beings. Still, would it kill you
to find a nice sentient being who happens to be Jewish?

Though only your skin, sinews, and bones remain,
though your blood and flesh dry up and wither away,
yet shall you meditate and not stir
until you have attained full Enlightenment.
But, first, a little nosh

It's official.......the last of the chicks have left the nest! The last hugs have been given and Christmas 2005 is officially closed and in the picture books.

The last hugs are always the sweetest....

The last hugs are promises of future hello's.

The last hugs are reminders of shared memories.

The last hugs are the brain's picture taking mechanism in four dimensions......sight, sound, smell, and physical touch.

The last hugs are salty reminders of time too quickly past.

The last hugs are the heart's longings to hold on "just a bit longer" and empty arms prolonging the last goodbye.

Is it ever right to be too right? You know, is it ever politically, morally or spiritually correct to tell someone who is already frustrated and irritated that if they had only listen to you in the first place they would not be in their present circumstances?

Years ago I remember reading about a curse the Greek gods placed on a man that he would always know what was going to happen in the future. The curse.....No one would believe him!

Some times I think that my mister has been cursed with the same affliction. He invariably knows the right way, the right timing, the right road, the right answer, the right course, the right equipment, the right tools etc.

However, he fails to factor in the human element...... emotions, lack of motivation, unforeseen circumstances, mechanical failures, procrastination and airplanes being over booked.

This was the situation this afternoon when we drove two hours to Richmond to get my Canadians on a plane bound for the frozen north land. We left in plenty of time despite having to turn around once for a forgotten pillow and blanket. We had a lovely meal and even did the some shopping.......Thus the problem.

You can't always make the line at the check out counter go faster. By the time we got to the airport a wild dash ensued to the ticket counter to get bags aboard. That's when it turned ugly.

There was only one counter person with 6 disgruntled consumers with lost luggage from a previous flight, the current flight was over-booked and they were not letting any one else check their baggage.

It was a very intense scene with lots of emotions and no satisfaction to my travelers. Oldest daughter in tears, having to pay extra to ensure they have tickets for tomorrow's flight leaving at the same time, lost wages from not being able to go to work, his parents inconvenienced as they were to pick them up at the airport, another two hour trip back home and the road trip continues tomorrow to get them back to the airport.

The mister taking all this in......begins venting that he knew this was going to happen, that's why he didn't want to leave later than.....how he hates to be late......why he always allows extra time especially at the airport.....and especially during a holiday! (I'm sure there was more to follow, but no one heard , especially me, as Mount Saint Lazy Daisy erupted.)

I have always been told that everyone carries two buckets with them.....one filled with water, one filled with gasoline. Whenever a fire breaks out we have the choice of which bucket we will throw on the fire......water, or gasoline!

The fire is already blazing......My child already feels bad enough about the whole situation. Is telling her how she messed up really the right time for a teaching opportunity?

I have learned many things from doing things badly. Failure has taught me to change certain habits. I remember harsh words said to me in anger, and frustration.......words that still haunt me even as an adult......words that were never quite erased from the "tape that starts playing in my head whenever things go wrong."

To the Mister's credit......Kindness won out! My child knows that we love them enough to be inconvenienced. (That Family does come first.....that even though the skies may not be so friendly they will always have a soft landing place in us.)

How's this for some good looking kids?

This is my favorite picture. I had my darling daughter (grrrl #1.) make a screen saver out of this picture.

They're so cute I'd claim them even if they weren't mine.

From Left to Right : Boy Wonder (aka "The Heir Apparent), new son-in-law (aka "The Cute Canadian) , grrrl #1 (grrrlmeetsworld), Texas T (baby girl's hubby) and baby girl.

Three are in New York, the other two in Canada....mom and dad in Virginia. Thank goodness for cell phones and emails.

Here we are at the Botanical Gardens in the Bronx. Since I missed the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center my family took pity on me and took me to see lots of trees, flowers, gingerbread houses, and even a holiday train with different buildings of New York made with all natural items and to scale.

This is the original 5.....Baby girl, My Mister, Lazy Daisy , boy wonder and big sister. This is the first time we have all been together in 2 years!

Boy Wonder was a great tour guide of Manhattan for big sis and hubby and they had a whirlwind adventure Friday. They went to the Moma and saw great art, Central Park, Trump Tower, Rockefeller Center, China Town, A Buddhist Temple, Strawberry Fields, the display windows of the huge department stores, a tour of Brooklyn and Boy Wonder's apartment as well as a tour of his work place in Chelsea.

Saturday after our tour of the Botanical Gardens we all went to eat at a very nice Mexican restaurant and visited baby sister's favorite places including Trader Joe's (wha a great place to get hard to find grocery items!)

Saturday evening we met Meghan (Boy Wonder's girlfriend) and went to Christmas Eve services. We also had a "Chinese Auction" with gag gifts that we all participated in. The best gift (or the one fought over the most) was a Santa hat with braids!

It was a really nice day and the weather was great for all our outdoor activities.

We really had a great time just being together.

We made it to the Big Apple. Here we are minus Tim (who took the picture) on Time Square.

Note my mister with his "don't mess with me bodyguard" face!

Boy Wonder on the far left, grrrl #1 with hubby, baby grrrl, me, and the mister.

My time in the city was short. We did see Grand Central Station, Times Square, and the huge Toys R Us store (packed with shoppers!)

Shortly after this picture was taken we went back to Tuckahoe and I spent the day in the ER with a mysterious episode of weakness, and almost passing out that we could not find a reason for. All test came back alright which was a blessing, but it surly took the wind out of my sails.

I'm feeling much better now. If nothing else a little more thankful to be spending time with my family this Christmas. Life is short, cherish those you love while you can.

  2. I hate long, Chritmas wish lists.....whose birthday is it anyway?
  3. I hate that Christmas decorations go up earlier and earlier every year.....maybe next year they will go up after the 4th of July!
  4. I hate pop boy bands singing Christmas classics just to sell a few more albums, or silly Christmas songs like "Grandma got run over by a Reindeer "or the "barking dogs."
  5. I hate exchanging gifts out of obligation to people I don't even really like or know.
  6. I hate the commericalization of Christmas.
  7. I hate the debate about the politically correctness of wishing some one Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, or Seasons Greetings.
  8. I hate that there is no Salvation Army Bell Ringers in front of some department stores anymore.
  9. I hate that there are few "magical Chrsitmas store window displays" any more.
  10. I hate that there is a mass transit strike in New York City that will mar our holiday plans with the family as well as cripple the city.
  11. I hate that there are political factions working at removing "Nativity Scenes from public buildings, and parks.

  13. I hate that our military families will be without love ones this Christmas.

The last few days have been really hectic here. We have been doing last minute baking, laundry, and packing as we head out for New York City tomorrow for the holidays.

Needless to say preparing dinner sometimes get pushed to the back of the list. Yesterday was one of those days so we decided to make it a "Chinese Night".

After the meal we turned to the fortune cookie for some light entertainment. The fortunes are very "generic" in order to appeal to a larger audience.

We began to read them out loud to each other......each was met with hilarious laughter by my daughter and son-in-law.

Fearing I had missed the obvious joke....I looked over at the mister who was looking at me with a questioning look. Okay, neither one of us "got it", now what? That's when I was informed of a new way to read the fortune. You simply add just three words to the end of the fortune. The three words are: " In the bedroom."

So here are some samples of last night's fortunes:

"Everything I do, I do to make my heart sing.....in the bedroom."

" Every important call is a close call.....in the bedroom."

"If you wait too long for the perfect moment, the perfect moment will pass you by...in the bedroom.

Next time you have a fortune cookie try it.....bet it will make you smile!

It was the best Christmas, it was the worst Christmas....it is the one Christmas I will never forget.

I am a spoiled princess. I have never gone hungry or lacked for anything. When I wanted a particular toy or object I usually got it. I may have had to wait till my birthday or Christmas but whatever I asked for would "magically" appear.

The Christmas I was 11 and my older sister was 14 we were told that Christmas would be very lean as my parents needed to replace the family car. My parents had long ago revealed Santa's real identity so felt like we could reasonably be included in this family decision.

Christmas at our house was always very lavish......lots of presents, toys, games, and new clothes. So, even though our parents had announced not to expect any presents other than what the aunts, uncles, and grandparents sent......we didn't really believe it.

One reason we didn't believe that there would be no Christmas was the mysterious noises, whispers, paper rustling and frantic cries of "Don't come in here right now!"

After all we reasoned, neither one of us could drive.......so a new car was not a family gift if only my parents could take it for a spin. We also thought they were telling us this just to see the joy on our little faces come Christmas morning when "Surprise.....Santa came after all!"

Christmas Eve, we eyeballed the few packages already under the tree. That's one from grandma, probably new mittens and a crocheted hat. That little one from our cousin....probably a small toy. That one's bound to be socks or underwear....none of them inspiring or even interesting. "They wouldn't really cancel Christmas," my big sister assured me.

Christmas morning arrived and in our household no one was allowed in the living room until my dad went in and turned on the Christmas tree lights. We had sliding "pocket doors" leading into the living room from the hallway that were closed on Christmas Eve.

My mom turned to us in the hallway and said, "Do you want to go open your presents or go sing Merry Christmas to the car?"

What kind of question was this? Who wants to go sing Merry Christmas to a car?.....Let me at those gifts! "Gifts, gifts," we cried in unison. "Okay, she said, and slid open the door....revealing our glorious Christmas tree and gifts......just the way we left it on Christmas Eve.

One quick look at the tree was enough to depress this 11 year old. "Let's go sing to the car", I said, clearly disappointed. "Oh no," my mom said, "lets go open our gifts!"

So we did. Sure enough there was new crocheted mittens and cap from grandma, small toy from the cousin and the usual suspects that polite relatives send you who hardly see you and have no idea what you might really like. It wasn't a bad haul.....just nothing that we really wanted.

"Oh look", cooed my mother......"What's this attached to the tree?"

Near the top branches was a note that said, "To the Watson Family" and had a string that went from the tree to the new car in the garage. "Let's follow the string and go sing Merry Christmas to the car!" she encouraged, knowing we were disappointed by having no presents.

We went to the garage very begrudingly only because my dad had on his "you heard your mother" face and we knew it was pointless to argue. So we opened the garage door and there sat "the car".

The car.....an object of great pain and disdain. The car! (that had robbed us of our happy childhood) . The car......that neither one of could drive. The car.......(well you get the gist!). I personally wanted to spit on the wheels but we were encourage by my mother and a stern look from my father to feebly sing: " Merry Christmas to you, Merry Christmas to you, Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas , Merry Christmas to you."

"Oh look," my mom said, "The string is caught in the trunk....maybe we should open it up and look inside?"

"I'm going in the house, " I said...(tired of the whole Christmas car incident, and hoping maybe I was adopted and that my real parents might be inside waiting for me with my Christmas gifts.)

"Oh no you don't", dad said, opening the trunk revealing the entire space filled with gaily colored boxes, packages, dolls, games, stockings, ribbons and candy. "Not till you help bring these presents inside!"

Presents! Gifts! Wow, maybe this new car thing wasn't as bad as I thought. My emotions went from sad, angry, and miserable to all smiles, excitement and merriment. Presents.....more than I had ever imagined at any Christmas before or since. Presents.....gifts, my parents did love us more than their car after all!

"I told you so," said my big sister.....wiping tears out of her face, (but not sounding nearly as confident as she wanted me to think.)

So that was my "Miserable Merry Christmas!" My parents later told us that that was the first time they had to sneak presents from the house into the car (instead of the other way around!).

I remember that Christmas very well.....but the only gift I still remember was the mittens and hat crocheted by my grandmother. The gift that I so quickly dismissed as insignificant, was the one I still remember.

I recently read an article about "Famous Food". No, I'm not talking about Famous Amos Cookies.....or any other particular brand name of food that people would easily recognize.

I'm talking about "my world famous Lasagna" or my "World Famous Apple Cake". (I should note....only famous in my world.) My recipes were handed down from other world famous cooks.....again, only famous in my world, such as my mom, sister, or even ripped out of a magazine.

What makes these "favorite" recipes famous. Just the fact that this is a meal that my family loved enough to want me to make for them again.....it becomes a tradition, a standard, a refuge, a source of anticipation and comfort. The simple dinner or dessert I made announced that everything was okay with the world....at least for one more night.

Over the years we start to associate different holidays with different foods. Christmas definitely has it's own food. So maybe the Pillsbury Dough boy had it right all along, ...." nothing says lovin....like something from the oven!"

As Paula Dean would say, "Merry Christmas and "best dishes!"

ah, do you smell the cookies baking?

Today is cookie day. We are making everyone's favorite cookies ( and yes, that means many varieties) to take with us for our Christmas in New York Holiday. Isn't it remarkable the things you do for your kids that you wouldn't do for yourself?

I think I'm becoming my mother! Mom has been a widow for over 20 years now but she never comes or goes anywhere without bringing an array of food with her. ( Usually all our favorite comfort foods!) We always tease her and ask her if she thought we couldn't feed her!

Anyway, I'm now the one who wouldn't think of seeing "the kids" without bringing food with me or making a food run to the grocery store when we arrive. I assume one day when they have children I will pass the baton on to them as "the designated soup carrier."

But for today, I'm enjoying having my grown daughter be a little girl again, making cut out cookies, licking the bowl and being nostalgic .

I look forward to being together with all the family in just a few days...so for me the"magic" of Christmas has already begun.

Just finished the parade route for the FFMB. It was an interesting tour starting in California and ending in Texas....guess that's why my feet are hurting tonight.

It's and interesting group with a wild variety of instruments...everything from a kazoo to a rolling piano! I don't know if we make beautiful music together but at least we let people know that they are being read and appreciated for their diversities.

The Friends of the Friendless Marching Band leave comments on the blog sites of bloggers who get little traffic or very few comments. It's nice to know you are not alone out in the blogsphere and some one has taken the time to write an encouraging note.

On another note: (music....notes...oh never mind)

My joy is over flowing tonight as we have my "Canadian Cuties" visiting for Christmas. We picked them up from the airport tonight and I have them for the next 10 days!

We are already plotting our adventures for the next few days till we leave for New York City for Christmas with the rest of the family.

Tomorrow will be a full day of cooking, baking, sight seeing, lots of smiles and giggles. Becky is my "computer expert" and the reason I have falling snowflakes! She is already looking over my blog and making suggestions, so look for some changes in the next few days. It's really nice to have talented children!

Yep, that's me.....tearing my hair out and gritting my teeth.

It's been that kind of day! Fortunately it's over and I don't plan on reliving it ever again!

I spent most of my day doing an end of the year review in pictures for Equipping the Saints, only to have it disappear never to be seen again.....(yes, I have heard of that "Save" button....I thought they were suggesting I put money in the bank right now! Who knew?)

Anyway, half my day disappeared into cyberspace! I did manage to print a preview page as I was composing so the good news is I can duplicate the work pretty quickly tomorrow.

Also, as frustrating as the day was......I was able to grab a friend and go pray about it before lashing out at anyone. My day went better and even with the disappearance of my news letter I responded by being frustrated with myself and not at those around me.

I really wanted to start decorating the house tomorrow but it will wait one more day, or two, or even till #1 grrrl gets home from Canada. Who knows it will probably be more fun to wait and decorate it together. God is Good even when I am not!

Do you remember years ago a doll named "Chatty Kathy?" You would pull her string and she would talk incessantly! (No, I wasn't the pronto type, but thanks for asking!)

Today I was Christmas Crafty Kathy. Pull my string and I made Advent/ epiphany Ribbons! I made about 20 of them and each took over an hour to complete. Needless to say I'm rather burned out by my craftiness and have decided never to do this again.(Yes, I know I say this every year, but this time I mean it!)

I started out making a paper construction paper chain so that my small children could capture a visual imagine of "how long till Christmas" by watching the chain get shorter and shorter till Christmas Eve.

As the kids grew older we began to write Christmas activities on the chain such as , "Make Christmas Cookies", "rent a Christmas movie", "make Christmas cards", etc. We would cut one link per day and do the suggested activity that day.

Later on it progressed to an Advent Ribbon with small wrapped pieces of Candy with a message from me about something I admired about each child. The candy was wrapped with wrapping paper and each piece was decorated like a Christmas package and glued on the ribbon.

Each of the children looked forward to their special ribbon and would ask me many times did I really think that he or she was .......(you fill in the blank). Each child had a specially decorated ribbon with 30 pieces of Candy and I have 3 kids.

As you may have guessed the ribbons kept getting shorter and shorter as I seem to always be in a race against the clock to complete them. So now they are for 12 days.....and can be either Advent calendar or an epiphany Calendar (depending on when I get them completed.)

Some where in the process, I started making a few for friends ( bad move as it lead to having to make more for other friends who didn't get one). My friends liked the ribbon so much that they were very disappointed if they did not get one the following Christmas.

So, what started out as a good idea snowballed into a chore, rather than an outpouring of affection. We send them out to our supporters every year and I think I have finally maxed out on them.

I think I will make an early New Year's Resolution now and publicly declare I will only make these ribbons for my immediate family starting next Christmas. (Be sure and remind me ok?) I'll post a picture of them later.

The Game is Over and the votes are in......Survivor Guteamala winner ended up being the under rated girl who managed to hang in there flying under the radar till the last crucial immunity challenge.

So what have I learned from all these seasons of watching Survivor and other reality shows like the Amazing Race? Here are my top 10:

1. I've learned that I watch way too much reality TV and that I need to be making my own realities and live my own life rather than sitting in front of the TV watching other people.

2. I've learned that people will tell you who they are and when they do you you should believe them .

3. I've learned that deprivation and stress will bring out the best in some people and the worst in others.

4. I've learned that it's not always wise to be bossy and overbearing (even if you are right) or too boastful about your accomplishments. Most people recognize quiet leadership skills and are drawn to those people.

5. I've learned that when given a chance to give away four new cars to your opponents by giving up your new car, it is better to give everyone else a new car and take your chances.

6. I've learned that nice guys don't always win and bad guys don't always lose. But if given a choice between bad and not so good, not so good starts to look better.

7. I've learned that leadership skills are not enough. perseverance, tenacity, endurance, physical strength, mental acuity, timing and just plain 'ole luck will many times tip the scale to a less capable person.

8. I've learned that favorable public opinion can win you a million dollars (see Rupert) or even a second chance to compete.

9. What goes around, comes around....the people you walked over to get ahead are the same one who ultimately make the decision of who gets the money.

10. Things said in secret always get revealed .....on national television.

I'm off to the Movies to see the Narian Chronicles : The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe. I'm really excited about this movie and am thrilled it received a 5 star rating. I'm hoping with the success of this movie that maybe Disney will consider making the rest of the books into movies also.

The Mister and I first read these books aloud to each other long before we had children. We've read this series to our kids many times and was always thrilled as the children began seeing more symbolism in the book than just the surface story.

We rarely go to town much less the movies so this is a big date night for me. We are actually going on a double date with our friends John and Sandy. I'll catch you later!

Post Script: This movie rocks! Totally loved it and it was a faithful adaptation of the book that took 5 years to make. The executive producer is Douglas Gresham ( C.S. Lewis' stepson) and the director also directed the "Shreck" movies. The battle scene are breathtaking!

The voice of Aslan is Liam Nielson. The children were well cast and look like what I imagined them to look like. I especially enjoyed the beginning of the movie which was very moving and puts the movie in the time frame of world war II.

The White Witch was very cunning (however, she looked somewhat deformed in some of her outfits). She was believably sweet and harsh at the next instant . I was glad she wasn't typecast as a "Cruella de Ville" type of villain.

I loved the whole experience! It was fun and I highly recommend it!

Narnia Opens with $23.4 Million

The big screen version of C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, produced by Walt Disney Studios in conjunction with Walden Media, had a healthy opening day yesterday, earning an estimated $23.4 million in 3,616 theaters nationwide, an average of roughly $6,500 per theater. It is very likely to end up in the top 20 for opening days, and if it holds up as well as expected, it could be making a strong play for the December opening weekend record, currently held by Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, which made $72.6 million its opening weekend in 2003.

I was walking through the garden of the blogsphere and stopped by her site for my daily grin and chuckle and was not disappointed.

Yellow Rose had been doing some work on The Advertizing Generator which takes business ads and plugs in your name to come up with some hilarious results. So I tried my hand with "Lazy Daisy" and here are some of my favorites.

Little. Yellow. Different. Lazy Daisy
( this is my favorite as I'm never been accused of being little....Yellow.... (yes, Chicken Little has nothing on me for being spooked easily!) ....Different.....absolutely (my mom says I'm an acquired taste!)

To Good to Hurry- Lazy Daisy (I liked that! Probably cause I hate to hurry and have to rush around. )

It's a Lazy Daisy Adventure (Ain't that the truth! Everything about me seems to be one wild ride!)

Come See the Softer Side of Lazy Daisy ( Wow, I have a soft side? Who knew?)

Choosy Mothers Choose Lazy Daisy ( Probably cause I survived three teenagers at one time....I would hope the experience gave me some wisdom!)

It's the Bright One, It's the Right One that's Lazy Daisy! ( I keep telling people how bright and right I am....Maybe this will subtly get the message across!)

I'm not really sure about this last one (yes, I did say last). It's catchy but I'm hoping it's not risque.

The dirt says hot, the label says Lazy Daisy.

Oh well, a daisy by any other name ......you know the rest

Today was a play day. Work has been so hard, and so physical lately that today we ( me and my two friends) decided that we needed to have a girl day and just play.

We divided the day into three parts and formed our own sisterhood......the first part of the day was spent in sharing prayer request and praying for each other and each of our families.

Second part of the day was lunch and a movie. Since none of us had any money we decided the best way to spend our time was to pop in a frozen batch of Chicken Lasagna while we watched "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants." I must admit to being the instigator for the movie and for the sisterhood we've developed.

I read the book several years ago while packing to move to Virginia. We had lived in Savannah, Georgia for 17 years so this move meant leaving friends and family behind. I was intrigued by the cover and the title and was really in to reading anything about the company of close knit circle of friends . I loved the banter and the plot and could easily understand why the book made the best seller list. The following year the sequel came out and my good friend Sandy gave me a copy as I had talked so much about the book. Last year the third book came out.....and naturally I read that also. When I discovered they would be making a movie Sandy and I decided that we had to have a movie date. (knowing full well that our misters would take a pass on a chick flick!)

The movie came out in June and we never did get to go see it together. So now that it is out on DVD we decided it was our time to watch it . It was a good movie and perfect for escaping the care and concerns of the day. My friends also enjoyed it and for a little while we were "carefree girls" again and not wives and mothers.

We ended the day with a craft project. We made Advent Ribbons. It basically consists of wrapping individual pieces of candy to look like a package and hot gluing them on to a ribbon. The person who receives the ribbon takes the bottom piece off for each day till Christmas. We personalized the candy gifts with an encouraging message about the person wrapped around the candy.

It was fun and inexpensive but a home made gift with lots of heart.

According to the calendar, winter doesn't officially begin till December 21st.

Yesterday was our first snow fall of the season.

It was really pretty and now the landscape is draped in white. I really believe the best way to enjoy the snow is viewing it from the window , while sipping on a hot cup of tea.

However, today I experience the cold from the unheated warehouse while we packed a container for the Marshall Islands. I thought how ironic it was that we were packing materials in the cold for an island paradise located between Hawaii and Guam , that is always warm (even in the winter!)

Have you ever noticed that once you get really cold that you stay cold all day even when you come inside? I think it's because our blood is thinner from living in the South and eating grits all these years.

What's your favorite way of warming up?

My personal favorite is slipping into bed and putting my ice cold feet on my nice warm hubby?

How's this for combining two of my passions.....ice cream and snowmen? I'm home sick so while I recover (with peppermint ice cream) I thought I would reprint a previous post...

I love Christmas time, the decorations, tree, Christmas music, special programs and yes, even the fluffy white stuff that's cold and you can make people out of it! I have a passion for SNOWMEN!

My husband says I have a "thing for fat, white men" and he is quite happy about it as he says he fits into that category.

I started collecting snowmen while we lived in Savannah, Georgia. I guess I became attracted to snowpeople because of the lack of snow in Savannah. It's really hard to get excited about Christmas while you are doing your shopping in Bermuda shorts.

One of my first snowmen was actually a water globe with a top hat, carrot, plastic coal and sticks floating in water....it was called "A Florida Snowman".

I had one or two snowmen and the next thing I knew....I was a collector. ( Does Three equal a collection?) It seems that friends and family are always excited about people who collect items as they feel they can always pick up a (You fill in the blank) for Mom, Aunt Suzy or that eccentric friend (which is the category I seem to most often fall).

The next thing I knew I was inundated with the fat white cold guys. They took over the mantel on the fireplace and spilled over into the window sills, side tables, porch and even the bathroom. I have cowboy snowmen, wooden snowmen, china snowmen, plastic snowmen, and snowmen wearing fur coats. I even have snowmen I don't even like ( but please don't tell my friends).

I also have a Christmas Tree with nothing but snowmen ornaments and little plastic snowmen to cover the lights. I even have a snow angel for the top of the tree! I have a snow lady "raggedy ann" doll with a snow doll.

Ok, I admit it, I'm a snowman addict! However, my passion for snowmen has really subsided with the lack of space in my little country cottage. Now I can look out the window and see snow.

I can create my own snowman, snow lady or snow family. I can wear boots and tromp on it, sled on it, roll in it, sweep it, shovel it and be overwhelmed by the beauty and whiteness of it. I can sing "White Christmas" and really mean it!

I love nothing better than looking out the windows from my home office and watching the birds eating from the feeder and the smoke coming from the Hardy. (We heat with wood.)

HOME is one of the nicest four letter words I know!

Is there anything worse than an seasonal cold? You know the kind....coughing, aching, stuffy head and miserable!

Add all these symptoms with holiday preparations and the demands of work and you have one miserable girl.

Today we loaded a container to Tajikistan. We had almost 50 people show up to help! So not only did we hand load 988 boxes of clothing, we were also able to dismantle typewriters ( for scrap metal), box more clothing, and move items to the warehouse for the next container on Tuesday to the Marshal Islands. Wow, it was a tiring but remarkable day!

I was really discouraged this morning ......tired, sick, cold, overwhelmed and disappointed by the lack of response I had gotten when I was called around for help. I really was "sporting a 'tude" by the time I got to the mission to prepare for the task at hand.

What a delightful surprise. People just kept pouring in to help. So I repented of my bad mood and the Lord and both had a good laugh. Why did we laugh?

Me: for thinking I was God's last resource!
God: for knowing I didn't even make the list!

Question: How do you make God laugh?
Answer: Tell Him your plans!

Aren't these adorable? I absolutely love snowmen! These are made out of terra cotta pots, a wooden ball, baby socks, materials, paint and buttons. You can find instructions here.

It's about time to get out the Christmas decorations for this year. Usually by this time the house is already decorated. So far, we have barely time to even be at home.

The decorations I love the most are the home made one. You know the ones.....ones made by your child in brownies or boy scouts. I especially enjoy the picture ornaments. I did notice that the girls hide their "awkward stage" picture at the back of the tree, (or beg me not to put them on this year!) Ah, but what is Christmas for if not for family humiliation! Let the games begin!

Peppermint Ice Cream!

Did I get your attention?

In our household it can't be Christmas until there is peppermint ice cream.

Peppermint Ice Cream only appears in the grocery stores around here at Christmas time and it is usually scooped up (pun intended) right away by other peppermint ice creamaholics.

We always have to buy two.....one to eat now and one to hoard and slowly cherish as the holiday season approaches.
It's a Wonderful Life is another simple pleasure that we enjoy. It can't be Christmas till we have watched it at least two or three times!

What are your simple Christmas Pleasures?

Becky's Feet on Savannah cobblestone
Originally uploaded by Momma B.

These are my daughter's feet. I have many pictures of Becky's feet. She seems to like taking pictures of her feet in unusual places. Maybe to prove that she was actually there standing on the very spot.

As an expectant mom we used to put a pie plate on my abdomen with marbles in it and let her kick the marbles around. I remember thinking that I was either expecting a soccer player with a great banana kick or a ballerina.

Of all my children she was the most active. I remember watching the "Star Wars" movie and feeling her kick me through all the light saber battles.

Like most new mothers the first thing I did when they brought her to me was pull back the blanket and check out those feet that had constantly been in my ribs. They were sweet feet and I still laugh when I see her foot print on her birth certificate.

So I was not prepared when she called me this evening to tell me she has a birth defect.....something very close to club feet. She had been to see a podiatrist as her feet had been hurting her and he told her she needs orthodontics now before the situation gets any worse.

Her feet are twisted and have compensated all these years from the pressure of walking by giving her bunions. She has been told she has "old feet" for a young person. She told me that the doctor told her this often happens in first born children whose mother have a small build. ( I liked the part about having a small build....just not the part that I had inadvertently crippled my firstborn!)

She was told that sandals and clogs are the worst shoes she can wear (both major faves!) So it looks like I have imposed a world of "old lady shoes on my baby girl!"

However, she had a bright side to the dilemma....according to Becky she should be able to put the star on top of our Christmas tree every year as she is now our "Crippled Tiny Tim." God Bless us every one!

It will cost your true love 6.1% more

Estimated price of '12 Days of Christmas' gift list up sharply due to gas, gold prices and bird flu.

A partridge in a pear tree will cost $104.99 this year, up 12.9 percent due largely to higher delivery costs.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - The price tag of the shopping list laid out in the classic holiday song "The Twelve Days of Christmas" is sharply higher this year, hit by such modern-day woes as higher energy and gold prices and concerns about the avian flu, according to an annual survey unveiled Monday.

PNC Advisors, which has charted the cost of the gifts laid out in the song for the last 21 years, put the price of the items this year at $18,348 in 2005, a 6.1 percent increase over last year.

Some presents will be difficult to get at any price this year. The threat of avian flu has restricted the international shipment of birds, thus preventing the purchase of three French hens from France, although there are domestic breeders of French hens which helped keep that gift's cost in line. But all the fowl mentioned in the song cost substantially more this year due to the increased delivery costs from higher energy prices.
